Historic Background
The Museum Building: The Court House and the Post Office were both situated in the structure to date commonly known as the Matatiele Museum.
The Dutch Reformed church bought the museum building in 1923 for the purchase price of 1150 pounds.
Museum Objectives:
The Matatiele museum serves as a catalyst for promoting heritage and tourism, with the following objectives:
- To expose young people to a hands-on exploration of diversified culture, language, music, history, topography and rock art.
- To encourage young people to find value in all cultures i.e. Basotho, AmaXhosa, AmaHlubi, and British settlers, and others such as Baphuthi, and Amabhaca etc.
- To Provide schools, District within jurisdiction a quality educational resource for field trips.
- Re-addressing the history of Matatiele
- Promoting and Preservation of the cultural heritage of the area.
- Formation of a museum committee to include a representative of all tribal councils.
